MAURICEVILLE NOTES.
(By Our Travelling Contributor.)
Round about Mauriceville the lambing is well forward, and so far but little loss has occurred—though the weather has been somewhat wet. Some Hocks of ewes look in rather poor condition, evidently the result of over-stocking. In the vicinity of Eas' Mauriceville, on the warm limestone country, the grass has now made a good start—the west is not quite so far forward— while in the vicinity of Hastwell, except for the bloom on the wattle trees, the advent of spring is hardly apparent.
The work of heightening the overhead bridge, which spans the railway line, has been completed. On the right hand side of the approach to it, coining from Masterton, a chain or two of fencing would be beneficial, and probably save an accident, as the spot is a dangerous one to both vehicles and stock.
The Lime Company, to economise labour, have instituted a system of sluicing the spoil from the quarry on the South-road, into the Mauriceville creek. This will obviate a large amount of carting.
Mr G. H. Clarke's gang of men have completed the metalling of the new formation on the west side of the suspension bridge, and given fine weather, the whole of the work will be out of hand in another week.
The friends of Mr Jacob Jacobsen will be glad to learn that his arm is making good progress towards recovery—but it will be yet some time before he will be able to undertake active employment.
