NON-RATEABLE PROPERTIES.

Question ot Water and Drainage

Charges

The question was raised in the Masterton

Borough Council, some time ago, by Cr

Temple, as to whether properties exempted from paying ordinary rates should not pay

the drainage rate and a water charge. The

Town Clerk was instructed to obtain inas to the custom in other borand the following replies have now baen received to the enquiries made: — ' From the Town Clerk, Palmerston North, stating that no rate was levied in connection with the sewage system, except for patent w.c's. TJiis charge was made (independent as to whether the property was rateable or not) under the provisions of " The Municipal Corporations Act, 1900," the amount beingfixed each year when the rates were levied. From the Petone Town Clerk stating that the sealed-pan system was in force there and a charge of from sixpence was made for re--1 moval from non-rateable properties. From the Wanganui Town Clerk, stating that no charge was made for such properties there. " The Council is much interested in the question raised," the letter continued " and I am directed to ask you if you will be kind enough to forward a precis of the replies you receive on the subject." #The Wellington Town Clerk advised that no charge was made on properties connected with the drainage which were exempted by law from payment of rates. The Nelson Town Clerk advised that no charge whatever was made. The correspondence was referred to a committee previously set up in connection with the matter.
