PAHIATUA NOTES.

(Special to Daily Times.)

The heavy rain which fell on Thursday and Friday caused a number of slips on the country roads. Constable Campbell intendt d going out to the back-block on Friday, but could not get any further than Makuri, and had to come home again.

The Makuri mail coach got blocked on Friday night at what is known as Ross , Hill, about ten miles this side of Makuri. The mailman had to take out his horses, and ride one of them into Makuri with the mails. Fortunately there were no passengers.

On Thursday night, whilst Mr A. A. Narbey was driving home in his buggy, when nearing Makuri ho heard sounds of a horse and trap coming along at full speed. He pulled into the bank as near as possible, and, thinking it was some drunken man driving, he called out, only to find that it was a runaway. Fortunately, only the wheel touched the hub of his buggy wheel, and passed on. Shortly afterwards he passed a man, who said that whilst crossing the creek he had been thrown out, getting a complete ducking. The horse and trap were owned by Mr Cotter, of Pahiatua. A search was made, but, the night being dark, it had to be given up. In the morning it was found to have gone over the bank shortly after passing Mr Xarbey's buggy, with the horse's head turned in such a way as to be looking over the splashboard. Very strange to say, the horse was not hurt, though it had lain there all night, and the trap was not much
