THE VICTORIA STATUE.
(By Telegraph — Press Association , ) AVei.lixc.tox, Last Night
The statue of the late Queen Victoria, which has been executed by Mr A. Drury, A.R.A., is on board the Turakina, which is expected to reach Wellington to-night. Mr Drury's fee for the work is £2000, and £850 has been already sent to him on account. The committee which has had charge of the arrangement met this morning, and decided to remit another £500 at once. The total sum raised to date is £1906 18s Bd, and about £150 is yet required to complete the cost of the statue and incidental expenses. In a letter to the Mayor, Mr Drury says he is so pleased with the panels that he is sending the original plaster casts to represent him at this year's Royal Academy. He expresses the opinion that the statue will be the finest representation of the late Queen yet executed in Great Britain. No date has yet been fixed for the erection of the statue.
