CARTERTON NEWS.

(Special to Daily Times.) Mr C. Smith, of Hastings, and an exCarterton young man, who was to have left Wellington at 3 o'clock on Wednesday morning in an endeavour to lower the record on a cycle from Wellington to Napier, did not start, it is thought owing to the high winds prevailing. At the time he was expected to arrive here, 8.10 a.m., the streets were lined with people to give him a cheer, but were disappointed. He intended leaving at 11 p.m. last night, weather permitting, but at the time of writing I have not heard of him passing through here. On Wednesday night, at the Victoria Hall, the grand theatrical attraction, the Woods-Williamson Company, staged "My Wife's Mother." The Company, as is usual when such Companies pay us a visit, were greeted with a large audience, and the way the comedy was applauded, was evidence that it was thoroughly appreciated by those present. The trophies presented to the Carterton Lawn Tennis Club, by Mrs A. Bish and Miss E. Booth, are at present on view in the window of Mr A. Bish, jeweller, High-street. They consist of a handsome silver-mounted cut-glass hairpin bottle, for lady, and a silver-mounted match box for a gentleman. They are for competition among the combined doubles. Four rinks from the Greytown Bowling Club are playing a match with the local Club, this (Thursday) afternoon, for the Booth Cup. Threshing is now in full swing in this district, and some very good yields are reported.
