Death of a Survivor ot the

Wairau Massacre.

Nelson, This Day. The death is annouuced of the Hon. J. Barnicoat, M.L.C., aged 91.

[The deceased gentleman was one of the survivors of* the Wairau Massacre, and was one of the • three- contract surveyors (the others being Messrs Cotterell and Parkinson), who, on the 15th April, 1843, were sent by Captain Wakefield, with forty assistants, to proceed with the survey of land in the Wairau. The result of what followed was the murder by the Natives, led by the chiefs Rauparaha and Rangihaeata of a number of Europeans. A monument at Tua Marina, near Picton, commemorates the tragedy.]
