SALE OF WORK AT KURUPUNI.

A Pronounced Success.

The sale of work held yesterday afternoon and last evening in aid of the fund for renovating and enlarging the Kurupuni Wesleyan Sunday schoolroom was a pronounced success from every point of view.

The sale was opened at half-past two in the afternoon by Mi , C. E. Daniell, who at one time held the position of Superintendent of the school.ln the course of his remarks Mr Daniell referred to the history of tho Sunday-school since he first became connected with it, about eighteen years ago. Ho recalled the fact of their having conducted their first services in the old Kurnpuni Hall, but fifteen years ago as the result of a great effort and much hard work they had secured the present building. The career of the school had been marked by an uphill fight almost from the commencement, but the tido of their affairs had now turned, and rapid progress was being made in the right direction. During the past twelve months the attendance had nearly doubled, and it was now absolutely necessary to enlarge tho building in order that tho school work might be carried on. The work of enlarging and renovating had been authorised, and it was gratifying to know that the necessary money was coming in freely. Mr Darnell congratulated the promoters of the sale on tbe attractive appearance of tho room, and expressed the hope that their efforts would be crowned with success. The speaker also referred to the scheme for enlarging the building. He explained that it was proposed to extend tho main hall back fourteen feet, and also to build two extra class rooms—one on either side —ten feet by fourteen feet. After Mr Daniell had formally declared the sale open, business was commenced at tho various stalls, the cash takings being very satisfactory. In tho evening there was a very large attendance, and the hall presented a. bright and attractive appearance. As in the afternoon, good business was done at all the stalls. The refreshment booth, in charge of Mesdamcs Hey hoe and Dunn, with a stall'of assistants, commanded a special share of attention. Other stalls were as follow:—Needlework stall, in charge of Mrs Rigg and Miss Burton; gentlemen's stall, in charge of Messrs A. Ralph and N. Jones; toffee stall, in charge of Misses M. Rigg and K. 1 Uirton : produce stall, in charge of Misses Pond and Allswortb. Miss lieyhoe had charge of the Christinas tree.

Among other side attractions were an " art " gallery in charge of Mr Pond, and the " YVonderscope." The latter was constructed by Mr Hugh Millar, and represented many hours of patient work. It showed a number of vessels from tiny yachts to a big battleship " at sea." The idea was unique, and the workmanship a practical tribute to tho ujgeaity and skill of the workman who designed and constructed it. The Hall was very nicely arranged and decorated, the work having been divided amongst the teachers and elder scholars. The President of the Committee. Mrs Bigg, and the Secretary. Mis 3 Burton, worked untiringly to make the function a success.

During the evening a musical programme was rendered under the direction of Mr S. I-I. Ralph. The various items were much appreciated and several of the singers had to respond to encore*. The programme was opened by a company chorus " The Carnivale," Miss Eddie sang " Love Light," Mr Nicol "The Sleeping Camp," Mrs Eddie " We'd Better Bide 'a Wee," Mr B. Church "In Port," Mrs Edwards "Five O'clock Tea." Mr S. H. Ralph song, Miss Pearson recitation, company chorus " Ripe Strawberries." Mr R. Sutton presided at the piano. The work of enlarging the school, for which donations amounting to over £50 have already been received, will be commenced almost immediately.
