LIQUOR IN A BOARDINGHOUSE.

A Police Prosecution.

(By Telegraph—Press Association^

Dunedin, Last Night

At fehe Police Court to-day George A. Neill, boardinghouse - keeper, Port Chalmers, was charged with haying kept liquor for sale in a no-license district. The premises, which were formerly known as the Provincial Hotel, were raided by the police on November 19, when considerable quantities ot beer, wine, spirits, etc., were found. Mr A. Haulon, for the defence, raised the point that prohibition had not been duly determined in the district, as an appeal was now before the Privy Council, and if a conviction were recorded he wanted to be in a position to move to have it quashed if the appeal case went in the direction he thought it would. He would snow that except tho beer all tho liquor had been in the house for a considerable time, some of it before Neill went into the house. The police had tailed to find any evidence of a sale, and when the raid was made had to wait until Neill returned from Dunedin, where he went daily on business, to get the keys to get into the bar. After hearing the evidence, the S.M. said that tho evidence of defendant was not satisfactory. He had given it in a hesitating and prevaricating manner. He would inflict a fine of £o, and £2 19s costs.
