SHEEP-STEALING DOWN SOUTH.

At the annual meeting of the Canterbury Sheepowners' Association, a letter was read from Mr Gt. G. Stead, stating that at his property near Waikari last year between 1500 and 1600 sheep were missed when shearing was finished in December. After dipping in March last there was a further shortage of 400; of these probably 100 were killed for use on the station, showing a net shortage of 300 since last shearing. He suggested the appointment of a special ranger, and the offering of a reward of £100 or £200 for information leading to the conviction of the thief or thieves. A long discussion ensued, and eventually a resolution was passed—That it be a recommendation to the incoming committee that £ # 100 be offered as a reward for information that will lead to the conviction and imprisonment of any person or persons found stealing sheep belonging to any member of the Union ; and that the said £109 be provided by a levy from the members of the Union.
