A HISTORICAL EVENT.
Nine-two years ago, last July, at
Salamanc3, the guns were roaring which jyere not to be stilled until the road was "■[■ fear for Wellington to march to Madrid. Duke was very busy completing arrangements for the impending battle, and had not thought about breakfa3t. His dutiful staff had denied themse've3 in order to keap him company. At last they got something spread on the ground behind a farmyard wall, and, Wellington
riding in, they tucked the leg of a cl i:ken into cne of his fists and a chunk of bread into another. He munched as he sat in the saddle. Suddenly he set spurs to bis horse, called on them to follow, threw his leg of chicken over his shoulder, and galloped as if for dear life. He had sighted the French at a gap in the hills, and knew the moment for battle had come.
