Legislative Council.
JBy Telegraph—Press Association} Wellington, Last Night. The Council met at 2.30 p.m. C.OWN FOR CHAIRMAN OF COMMITTEES. The Hon. H. bcottand moved that the Chairman of Committees, when in the chair, should wear a gown as is the custom in similar Upper Houses.
The Hon. C. Bo wen moved to refer the matter to the Standing Orders Committee.
The Hon. G. Jones opposed the amendment, stating that the tendency of this enlightened age was not towards this sort of humbug. The Hon. F. Trask opposed the motion on the ground that New Zealand set an example to other countries, and they would smile if the Council compelled the Chairman to wear a gown, The Hou. K. Moaves (Chairman of Committees) said he was not anxious to wear a gown and would feel awkward in one. (Laughter). The Hon. C. Bowen's amendment was negatived and the division on the Hon. IL Scotland's motion resulted in a tie and the Speaker cave his casting vota against it. LAND DRAINAGE BILL. The Land Drainage Bill was recommitted and some trifling amendments were inserted. The Bill was reported as amended and the Council rose at 5.30.
