(Received To.day, at 7.52 a.m.)
London, Last Night.
The authorities have given Adolf Beck a solatium of £2000 for imprisonment on a charge of which he was found to be innocent
IA cable message, on Ist August, stated that a free pardon had been granted to a man, named Adolf Beck, who had been twice convicted of defrauding women of jewellery. The actual thief, who bears a strong resemblance to Beck, and has lately been convicted of similar thefts, has confessed to the other offences. A subsequent message was to the effect that William Thomas, supposed to be the " double " of Adolf Beck, had confessed his real name as Meyer. He practised in Adelaide for some years as a consumption specialist, having a large clientelle. He left there in 1890, and alleged his intention of studying Koch's cure. The Home Secretary was then arranging with the Treasury to compensate Beck. |
