(Received Yesterday, at 9.14 a.m.) London, Last Night. Obituary—General Sir J. A. Ewart, actat 83.

'General Sir John Alexander Ewarfc served in the Crimean and Indian Mutiny campaigns, and was present at the battles of Alma, Balaclava, Inkerman, and both assaults upon Sebastopol; also at capture of Kerteh and Yenikale ; received two sword cuts at tho relief of Lucknow, and lost his left arm by :i cannon shot at Cawnpore. He became Lieut.-Colonel of the 93rd in 1858, and commanded the 78th Highlanders during 1859-64; was A.D.C. to the late Queen, 1859 72; commanded a division in India 1877-80. In 1872 he was promoted to the rank of Major-General, in 1877 to Lieutenant • General, in 1884 to General, and was Colonel of the Gordon Highlanders in 1884-95. His distinctions were medal with four claspe, Legion of Honour, Mcdjidu, Piednaontese medal for valour, Turkish medul for Crimea, medal and clasp for the relief of Lucknow, three times promoted for service in the field, and recommended for the V.C. He was tho author of " A few Eemarks about the British Army," and " The Story of a Soldier's Life."]
