STRANGE PHENOMENON IN SOUTHERN RUSSIA.

The remarkable phenomenon which recently displaced the waters in the sea of Azof from Tagantog and several other South Russian towns wrought greater destruction than was at first reported. Many hamlets were completely wiped out by the storm, and a battleship might have ridden free on the ravines around the village of Phastaro. The country there was transformed into a lake, and a large sailing vessel driven before the gale was left high and dry with the skipper and crew 500 yards from the the normal shore line. When the hurricane was at its worst the deep waters were swept up over such an area that it would be possible to play football where large vessels fully loaded were plying a few days before. The water had completely receded over a wide stretch of shoals, which was left studded with vessels. The total drowned or killed was nearly 200.
