FLAX-MILL REFUSE.

Effect on Trout.

The Milton correspondent of the Otago Daily Times writes:—The injurious effect of flax-mill refuse upon the trout in our streams is painfully in evidence just at present at Manuka Creek. The mill had only been at work a couple of days, and when Ranger D. Hassett visited the place on Sunday he found hundreds of fish dead in tbe pools ar far away as half a mile from the mill. One speciment which rose to the surface on the water being stirred up was a couple of pounds weight. It should be pointed out to millownera that steps have to be taken to filter the water before allowing it too enter the course, and that heavy penalties have in many instances been inflicted for river polution affecting fishermen's rights.
