MAIN TRUNK LINE.

Alleged Satisfactory Progress.

Another View of the Question.

Writes the Rata correspondent of the Wanganui Chronicle :— Writing of the Railway Department reminds me that in Thursday's paper a Press Association item from Wellington speaks of the satisfactory progress being made with the Main Trunk line. Satisfactory ! I wonder who is satisfied. Certainly not those who live along the line or those who, in the back country, have been waiting for this line for years. The only satisfied people I can think of are those who inspired the paragraph—those who are paid good salaries for superintending the progress. Perhaps the men employed on the co-operative work — although I hear that they are not too well treated —and certainly the Government who find this job a very convenient power in their hands at election times.
