Sir,—l have to thank you for calling attention to the iniquity of the Borough valuation which is now proceeding, but you are too considerate —far too considerate —towards the powers that be. In 1901 lay rates were moderate, but in 1902 they were three times as much as in 1901, in 1903 seven times as much as in 1901, and I am told that the present valuation will make them in 1904 ten times as much as in 1901. Is it not time to put in the peg ? The evil does not stop here, for the new valuation gives the Government a pull with more Land Tax. The Borough Council empties one pocket and the Government skins the other; aud between " the blessed confederates" there will not be a red cent. left. Is it not time that a Ratepayers' League was formed in Masterton to save our shirts ?—I am, etc.,
