THE PREMIER IN THE SOUTH ISLAND.
[By Telegraph--■■Press Association), Timaru, This Day. The Premier is making a short visit to Timaru on the invitation of the Mayor and Borough Conncil. In course of some remarks as guest at the Municipal dinner, last night, the Premier dwelt on the importance of the preferential tariff, as the final result of the loss of British trade to foreigners must be loss of naval supremacy. This was his reason for proposing the measure. Canada had given preference to the Mother Country, but New Zealand had done so to the whole Empire. "When this lead was followed all round there would be some hope that through reciprocal treaties universal free trade would be obtained. He explained and justified his protest against the introduction of Chinese into the Transvaal as adding another social difficulty to an Imperial question. He announced that the new syllabus would be considered by the Inspectors, then by a joint Committee of Inspectors and the Teachers' Institute. The result should be the most perfect syllabus south of the equator. The Premier will leave for the North to night.
