CARTERTON NEWS.
(From Our Own Correspondent).
The Wairarapa South County Council met on Saturday afternoon, when the question about the Gladstone-Masterton-road cropped up. The Chairman, Mr. Bunny, said the Gladstone people had quite enough to do to keep their side of the bridge in order, and if the Masterton people wanted their trade they ought to metal the road. Mr Buchanan, M.H.R., said the Masterton people were very good at promising, but very bad at redeeming their promises when made. They had promised to the Taueru bridge, but only J6140 was collected, so it was their turn to pay the piper. Yesterday and this morning we had a pretty good fall of rain that was very acceptable to everything. Crs Buuny, Fisher and Buchanan were appointed to represent the Council at the sitting of the Commission of Enquiry in the matter of the inquiry into the licensing petition of the County, in connection with the Returning Officer. Although the bush fires were burning rather fiercely, the heavy rain has put them nearly all out.
