GOLF.

The Championship Meeting. (By Telegraph—Press Association). Napier, This Day. For the second day of the Golf Championship Meeting at Wai-o-hiki, the weather was fine, although the wind was stronger and colder than was pleasant. There was a very large attendance of spectators. In the afternoon the second round of the Championship was played. The best game of the afternoon was that between J. C. Gillies and J. C. Bidwill (Wairarapa), which turned out a much more even game than was expected, and aroused great enthusiasm. The Wairarapa representative is a youpg player, but he has shown excellent form. Gillies baa been hardly playing his best. Bidwill wont away with a strong lead, bis driving being rather more effective than Gillies', while bis putting was specially fine. Gillies, however, gradually worked up to him, and finished by beating him at the last hole but one. Neither player drove off well, and Gillies with his second shot struck a wire, which cost him the fir3t hole. Bidwill made a magnificent put, winning with 5. Bidwill's second drive was splendid, landing him close to the bunker, while Gillies got close to the fenco and lost a stroke. Bidwill won the second hole with 4—2 up. Gillies won the third hole in 4. Gillies had the advantage of the approach at the fourth hole, but Bidwill stymed him on the green, and the hole was halved—Bidwill 1 up. Bidwill won the fifth hole in 5 -2 up, the sixth hole in s—up, the seventh hole in 5. Bidwill 4 up. Gillies won the next with 3, Bidwill 3 up, and the following hole in 5. The young player was thus two up at the half-way hole. The next Gillies won in 3, leaving his opponent 1 up. The following hole was halved in 5. Gillies won the twelfth hole in 4. This left the players equal. The thirteenth hole was halved in 5, the players being still level. The fourteenth hole was also halved. Gillies was improving his form at every stroke, while the Wairarapa pla3'er seemed not quite so steady as at the start. The fifteenth hole was halved in 5. ' The sixteenth hole Grilles won in 5. At the seventeenth hole Bidwill got the advantage on tho second shot, but then missed the approach, and allowed Gilles to win 2up and Ito play. It was a great game. Bidwill deserves high credit for his performance. He is a coming champion beyond doubt.
