PETER'S PENCE.
An International Commission Suggested. (Received To-day, at 12.6 a.m.) Eondon, August 10. The foreign Cardinals propose an international Commission to manage Peter's Pence. They suggest decentralisation to enable the Cardinals at a distance to settle affairs of minor importance on their own authority. |" Peter's Pence " originally presented by Ina, King of the West Saxons, to the Popo, for the endowment of an English College there, a.d. 720; it was paid at the feast of St. Peter, and levied on all families possessing half-acrown per annum in land, yearly rent; the tax was confirmed by Oifa, 777, aud afterwards claimed by the Pope as an annual tribute; ordered not to be gathered and paid to Rome by Edward 111. c. 21. 1366; again revived, but finally suppressed by Henry VIII., 1534.]
