The shopwalker of a Melbourne drapery establishment observed a lady walking out of the shop carrying aparccl in a rather suspicious way. There was a good attendance of members at the quarterly meeting of the Commercial and Farmers' (Jlub yesterday evening ; and twenty new members were elected. A social committee was appointed to arrange the tournaments of the Club, consisting of Messrs F. J. Dupre, R. J. Eatnes, J. K. Blinkhorne, D. A. Morton, and J. Whittaker. Tropbiee were presented to the Club by Messrs F. J. Dupre", J. Macara, and C. H. Smith, who received votes of thanks. Tho tournaments are to consist of euchre and cribbage matches. A number of minor matters affecting the welfare of the Club were also discussed and dealt with. The Club now has a membership of 143.

Harry Dennett and James Cleary were charged at Napier, on Tuesday, with assaulting a young lady. Three young ladies were driving in a trap to Clive. One of them having dropped her whip, stopped to pick it up, whereupon accused got into tho trap, and. said they were also going to Clive. One of the accusedseized two ducks and refused to give them up. Then one of the ladies struck him with her whip, and he hit hor violently in tho face with a duck. At that time some men came up and interfered. Accused's counsel said that the two men were drunk at the time. Dennett was sentenced to three months' aud Cloary to one month's imprisonment, with hard labour.

Tho Committee appointed in connection with the formation of a Wairarapa sub-centre of the N.Z. Boxing Assotiation held a meeting last evening, when it was decided to convene a general meeting shortly after the meeting of the Carteicton, Greytown, and Featherston delegates, which is to be held at Carterton on Wednesday next. In all probability the season will commence at the beginning of August, by which time it is anticipated everything will be in working order. Mr Hogg, M.H.8., who has lately been in communication with the Lands Department in reference to Native and other reserves in the Masterton district which he considers should be opened up for settlement, is informed by the Minister of Lands that the native blocks can only bo dealt with under the Maori Land Administration Act, 1900. It will be necessary to obtain further power under tho Land for Settlement Act to take native land suitable for close settlement. With reference to other reserves near Eketahuna, to which attention has been called, the Commissioner of Crown Lands is being asked to see what can be done to make them available for selection.
