A despatch received from Colonel Rochefort, tho Chief British Officer aocompanying the Abyssinian column, dated June 6th, shows that the Abyssinians, before the Mullah's fight northward, surprised his Baggari horse and spearsmen at dawn on May 31st, at Layd, near Bur. After slight resistance the enemy's mounteds fled.

The Mullah's uncle and a thousand spearmen are reported to have been killed and a thousand camels captured. The presence of the Abyssians prevented the Mullah from obtaining water south of the Gerlogubi-Goladi line.

Colonel Rochefort, writing on June 14tb, states that the Abyssinians, owing to the insufficiency of water, were unable to reach Geriogubi, and grain requirements necessitated their going to the Sheble district.
