ANOTHER UNIVERSITY AT HOME.

Lord Rosebery's Scheme,

(Received To-day, at 9.10 a.m.) London, June 29. lord Rosebery has propounded a C-chenjg for the establishment of a collljPfo be applied to science, in connection with the London University, similar to that existing at Charlottenburg, in Germany. The money for the scheme has already been found. The trustees include Lord Eosebery (chairman), the Duke of Devonshire, Eight Hon. A. J. Balfour, Sir Francis Mowatt, Herr Julius C. Wernher, Eight Hon. R. B. Haldane, Dr Archibald Bobertson, Vice-Chancellor of the University, and Sir Arthur Thomas Eucker, Principal of the University. The cost, apart from the site, will be JE300.000, Wernher Beit and Co. are large contributors. Donations have also been received from Lord Strathcona, Lord Cashel and others. The Commissioners of the 1851 Exhibition will give the site, valued at _• J. 200,000, adjacent to the University X- Buildings, Kensington College will be a School of the University, working in co-operation with the Central Technical College, the Roy_Mfcollege of Science, and other brancnes, providing facilities for original research. In a letter unfolding the scheme, Lord Eosebery asked the London County Council to undertake its maintenance, which he estimates at _320,000 per annum. Lord Eosebery strongly emphasises the importance of picked students of the Motherland, and the Colonies, finding opportunities for acquiring a more advanced education within the Empire. The newspapers recognise the importance of Lord Eosebery's scheme from the standpoint of training for British mining engineers and metallurgists. The Chemists' Times states that Herr "Wernher will offer £100,000 immediately, and a similar amount later on, on certain conditions.
