MURDER TRIAL AT NEW PLYMOUTH.

The trial of Walter Smith, on a charge of murder, was continued till 10 o'clock last night, when the case for the prosecution closed. The Judge and jury were willing to proceed, but counsel for the prisoner point blank refused to open his case after being engaged for 12 consecutive hours. Eventually the jury agreed to adjourn, and were locked up for the night. A feature of yesterday's proceedings was the searching crossexamination of one of the witnesses for the Crown, relative to his past career. The revelations were somewhat sc.isational.
