New Zealand v. England.
Reese Scores 148
English Umpire's Decisions
Severely Criticised.
{By Telegraph — Press Association),
Wellington, This Day
Before the innings of the Colonials closed the respectable total of 274 was amassed, of which " Dan" Eecse, the young Canterbury player, contributed more than half. His was a magnificent display of clean cricket, and without a blemish, save for a very hot return to Hargreave, which the latter was not to blame for declining. His scores included 19 fourers and 8 threes. His clean, free hitting all round the wicket was greatly admired, and he received a great ovation when he was dismissed as the eighth wicket, the Englishmen joining in the dembnstration.
Mahony and Tucker also batted with confidence, as did Calla'way.
Towards the end of the innings Thompson, who bore the brunt of the bowling, got three batsmen leg before, each decision coming from the English umpire, and in two or three instances the decisions were severely criticised. Following are the scores :—?
