WATER SUPPLY FOR LANSDOWNE.

Question Submitted to the Masterton Borough Council.

Committee Set up to Confer on

the Matter.

At the meeting of the Masterton Borough Council, held last evening, a letter was received from Mr F. W. Temple, Secretary to the Committee in connection with the proposed water supply for Lansdowne, enquiring whether or not, the Council was prepared to supply Lansdowne residents with water on the terms of 5 per cent, valuation, or to sell it at a fixed price per thousand, gallons, the residents undertaking the work of the laying of the pipes, and the construction of the reservoir.

The Chairman mentioned that when the Lansdowne residents put in a previous application tho opinion of the Council was that water should not bo supplied unless a portion of Lansdowne is included in the Borough.

Cr Eton thought the application required duo consideration before arriving at a definite conclusion. They should ascertain whether tho requisite quantity of water is available.

Cr Ewington mentioned that tho proposal now before the Council had been submitted, indirectly, to the Engineer and Cr Ewington believed he approved of it. Thero is sufficient water to supply Lansdowne by reason of the reservoir being constructed. He moved that Crs Renall, Hcssey, Elliott, Eton, and the mover be a Committeo to confer with tho Lansdowne Committee on the matter.

Cr Elliott considered that providing there was sufficient water, and tho Lansdowne residents were prepared to pay a fair price, that the Council should supply the water. They should not force the inclusion into the Borough of a portion of Lansdowne. Personally he did not believe it would be any advantage to the Borough.

Cr Hollings supported the motion. They should not act the "dog in the manger" style in this business. If there was, as ho understood, thousands of gallons of water going to waste, they might as well let tho Lansdowne people have some. It would earn revenue, and they needed all tho reyenuo they could get, and if they could earn revenue in the manner suggested, thoy should do it. Cr Hollings suggested that the Engineer's name be added to the Committee, in which tho mover acquiesced.

The Chairman mentioned that what he could not understand was that they had a supply for 15000 people and it was showing signs of running short with four thousand. It was a question of whether the water can bo spared.

The motion, on being put to the meet ing, was carried.
