CARTERTON NOTES.

A special meeting of the local Fire Brigade was held in their meeting room last night, about thirty members being present. It was explained that as sereral of tho members had objected to the action of tho South Carterton branch ordering hose, etc, without first consulting the centre brigade, it was decided that this meeting be called and the matter be specially dealt with. Tho south end mcmbeis said when they collected the £lO, and received another .fiJO from the Borough Council they thought it was an understood thing that the appliances ivero to be ordered. The discussion finally ended in the action of the South branch in ordering the hose, being endorsed by the chief brigade. There was a fair attendance of members at a special meeting of the local Cycling Club lastuight,tonjakc arrangements for their Boxing Day sports, A committee was appointed to canvas for refreshments, and a number of ladies will probably preside at the luncheon tables.

The annual picnic in connection with ic Belvedere School will uc held on ic 20th inst.

At the present lime there are thirtytwo members on the roll of the local fire Brigade. A ycry amusing little incident was

witnessed on the Belvedere-road the other evening. A derelict calf was vainly running to and fro in search of its dam, when a couple of young ladies came sailing along on bicycles. The calf in its fright made a bolt after one of them, and the young lady had to scorch along for a considerable distance to keep clear of tho unwolcomo follower. The calf eventually gave up (ho chaso and (he ladies continued their ride in peace.

At last night's meeting of the local Cycling Club sixteen new members were elected.
