Wellington, Monday. t A sad case of accidental shooting i happened at Wainui-o-mata, yesterc day morning. >' A young man named Herbert 1 Palmer, aged 27, a Clerk in the j Circulation Branch of the General Post Office, Wellington, was out . pigeon shooting with his brother and ' two boys. [ Herbert fired and brought down a . pigeon, and rested thegun against his : thigh, while lie put the bird in bis bag. . While doing this, ho heard a i flutter in a tree abovo, and snatched s hie gun to have a shot, and as he I caught hold of the gun, it went off, and ho received tho charge in his i right thigh, the shot blowing a hole clean through the poor fellow. | He bled to death in a few minutes, ' being fully conscious almost up to ; the last, that the wound was fatal. The body was brought in to the Hull. Palmer had only recently returned from 'Frisco, where he had gono for a trip as Mail Agent, Later. Palmer was very well known in athletic circles, being a member of the Star Boating Club. He had been in several of the winning regatta crews at Christchurch, Piclon, and Nelson, and was one of the most popular men in tho shed. He was also a prominent member of tho Wellington Harriers, and of; ■ the Amateur Athletic Society, and held several good records as a long distance runner. He was a single man, and resided with his widowed mother. ALLEGED FAILING TO CONTRIBUTE TOWARDS HIS FATHER'S SUPPORT. 9 The warrant for the arrest of Matthew Ferrick having arrived from Christchurch, he was again brought before tho Masterton S.M. this morning, on the charge of failing to contribute towards thosupport of his father, Anthony Ferrick. A remand to Christchurch was applied for by Constable May. Mr Pownall, who appeared for Ferrick, said that his client was prepared to swear that lie had never received any summons, and when ho left his father he was in work and in fair circumstances. He objected to the remand on this account as he had had no notice of these proceedings. Matthew Ferrick had, inconsequence of this arrest, lost his employment. With regard to the advise he had given accused at the flailway Station to walk away, the Constable had no warrant with him. His Worship (MrT. Hutchison) said that it was no use the accused doing this, and the Constable was jus- 1 titled in making the arrest, The i warrant was in Masterton if not in < May's actual custody, As far as he i could seo the man must be dis- < charged as soon as he appeared in Christchurch, as there was no order made against him. If tho statements made by counsel wero correct, he was afraid there had been a miscar riageof justice, but he must assume the papers wero in order, and he had no other course but to remand Per- ' iek to Christchurch, 1
