FOOTBALL.

[DY DAMOCLES,] The Groyiown team failed to put in an nppoarence on Saturday, and Masterton clainnd the match. The day was a grand one, and the postponement caused disappointment to the crowd'of enthusiasts in Masterton. If the local Club now gain their protest against Greytown, a final match for the banner will have to be played between Ihe Masterton and Star tenuis. '.^^p^p^^The match, played on the Oval on Saturday between ihe Homebush Rovers and the Masterton Second, resulted in a draw, each team scoring four points. The game was a very curious one fiom start to finish, and caused e great amount of amusement to the spectators. Pike and ])orset scored tries for the Rovers, and Kara and Munday did likewise for Masterton. The majotity of theJ»]ayers were Maoris, and with barjjfijcj went in for the game in rcL lamest. Several times the w(pre of the referee was wholly disregarded, and tho amusing spectacle of players tearing down the field in their eagerness to score, with no one to oppose them, was often witnessed. The looks of disgust and disappointment on their faces when their succbsblul efforts were not accepted, was really in> mense. The rules were oftentimes broken, and if the referee had been very particular, the game «ou!d bavo been a series of free kicks, But happily the referee looked over the little discrepancies, and the spectators had the benefit of seeing a real rough and tumble game. Of course, the finer points were noticeable among the. more advanced playors, and some really excellent form displayed, Hudson, Remeni, Dorset and Pike were seen to advantago in tho ranks of the Rovers, and Aguew, Thompson, Jeffries and Munday shone ously for Masterton. ,wsv
