A PARADOX.
In the course of his lecture on Wednesday evening, the Premier alluded to monopolies, nnd argued that whatever partook of the nature of a monopoly, such as. telegraphs, post offices, etc, should remain in the hands of the State, Under the term " monopolist," he also included the freeholder. It seems somewhat paradoxical that a politician, and that, too, the leader of a party which is expected to make Protection its next election cry, should make such a statement. We find no fault whatever with it,' but if Mr Stout is an enemy of monopolies, then he surely be a freetrader, for nothing is clearer than that Protection creates monopolies, and directly taxes the many for the direct benelit of the few. We have all along doubted whether it is really the intention of Ministers to adopt Protection as a platform, and now feel strengthened in our belief, Mr Stout's utterances must certainly be either inconsistent with his principles, or the Ministry has been belied by its own supporters,
