*. . Newly-arrived female immigrants appear to speedily acquire Hie independence and impudence for which some typical colonial servant-girls aro noted. Of the latest hiring-timo at the immigration depot, Sydney, the following account is given :—One girl would not engage herself to any one unless slio had a guavanteo that every Sunday she might see a holy father. A verbal guarantee was given, and this young lady, was triumphantly borne off by a lady who hitherto .had been unsuccessfully trying all round the room to get someone to suit her, Some object to go into the bush, or do the washing, or the cooking, or the scrubbing, and there were many out of the 115 ladies who had hopefully gone to the depot for an immigrant who had to return to their destinations disappointed, The servants dictate tho terms, and mistresses must submit, or do without domestic help, The girls saw there were treasures in the market, anJ could they help but do so when ladies capped the bidding of each other, and hustled their hirelings away into handsome cabs for fear they might lose them,
