THE FIRE BRIGADE APPEAL, TO TIIE EDITOR. ' Sin,—Grant me a little space for a few parting remarks about the Fire Brigade's Secretary.

I am astonished at the tone of independence assumed by Mr Easthope in his letter of Tuesday's issue, especially as a subscription list is at present in circulation. It is, in my opinion/very questionable policy to deliberately discard individual support to the Fire Frigade. Would the Brigade be in existence now except for that individual sympathy ond help, which its Secretary in a moment of irritation is prepared to ignore 1 Is the Secretary justified in asking any ratepayer or subscriber of the most trifling amount to keep that trifle in his pocket? that the'brigade is independent of individuals, It is to be hoped that the ratepayers generally, including myself, have too high an appreciation of the brigade's services to take the Secretary at his word. I for one will continue to contribute my mite when called upon, irrespective of the billious efiusions of its Secretary. There is one paragraph in Mr Easthope's letter which I am inclined to think true—where he says: "Mr Lowes will have a warm time during his term of office, if he notices ia a similar manner every little reflection cast upon the Council," A repetition of such unfounded and unjust reflections from the same source would no doubt be annoying; but I have been told that Mr Easthope is a man with a grievance, and it assumes various forms,' according to circumstances. While crediting this assertion, I have persistently refused to believe the statement that liis sufferings from that cause aro very poignant at certain times, and that, strange to say, those attacks occur at intervals of four weeks, Yours, etc,, Wji, Lowes,
