GREYTOWN BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The usual fortnightly meeting was held ou Monday evening. Present—Ora Udy, Hammerich, • Fuller, Barnard, Baillie, Wakelin, and Kempton; Or Baillie in the Chair. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, , An application, from R. Rush for permission to erect a verandah in accordance with the by-laws was granted. A letter from the Waiohine River Board of Conservators re rates outstanding was read, Resolved—That immediate steps be taken for the recovery of all unpaid rates. A letter from the River Board to the Borough collector re commission, etc., for collection of rates, and requesting that owing to the Colonial Auditor refusing to audit the books unless commission was paid by cheque, that the amount stopped might be paid in, and a cheque would be given immediately. Upon discussion, Or Wakelin moved,.and Or Fuller seconded—That the clerk be instructed to write the River Board, stating that this Council' is, of opinion that clause 20 of the Wellington Rivers Act entitles them to deduct the cost of collecting rates from the amount collected. Carried.

It was suggested that the Colonial Auditor's attention 1 should be called to the clause.

The return of poundkeeper to 31st Jan. was read, shewing gross receipts frota Ist December to 31st January at £9 Bs.

Resolved—That the amounts due to ranger and poundkeeper, viz., £2 10s each, be passed for payment, Or Wakelin moved, and Or Kempton seconded—That the Works Committee be instructed to report at next meeting the advisability of continuing the footway to the Railway Station. Carried. Resolved—That the Inspector of Nuisances be instructed to furnish reports at each fortnightly meeting, and that lie talie steps to remove a broken dray, now in the Main-street at once, and also to report upon the construction of a chimney in the premises of Mr W. J. Roydhouse.

Resolved—That the Clerk be instructed to employ a man to break the. large stones on the Main-street between the Rising Sun Hotel, and Humphries' line. Cr Udy called attention to the four chains of metalling near Cotter's gate, and advised that the work be done at once. " Resolved—That Cr Baillie interview Mr W. H.' Morris re same, with power to employ him to, do tho work, at a cost not exceeding £2 per'chain. The meeting then adjourned.
