WAIHAO DOWNS

PICNIC AND PRIZE-GIVING

(Onr Own Correspondent). The annual picnic of the Waihao Downs School was held as usual in Mr A. V. Richards' Park last month. The time was spent in races and games and many prizes were distributed. The ladies of the district provided much appreciated afternoon tea after which Mr Cleland, chairman of the School Committee, assisted by Mrs Cleland and the teacher, Miss C. Hamilton, presented the prizes. The Rev. J. C. Harkness delivered to the children an interesting talk in the course of which he told them many amusing stories of his own school times. Mr Cleland, in the course of a short address to the pupils, gave them much kindly advice and wished all a pleasant holiday, which would .see them return to school in the new year vigorous and healthy. The prize list was as follows:—Std. VI —Edward Murphy 1, Kathleen Thompson 2, Henry Allen 3. (Florence Turner (Spelling), Norah Th oinpson (Composition), Marjorie Ashworth (Handwork). Std. V —Gardiner Cleland 1, John walker 2, Dorothy Murphy 3. Percy Connor (Handwork). Std. 4—-Al-bert Turner 1, Elizabeth Allen 2, Margaret Goodwin (Recitation). Std. 2 —William Christie 1,. Gwendoline' Rolfe '2, David Parsons 3. Thom as Rolfe (Spelling), Patrick Muiphy (Arithmetic). Std. I—Euan1 —Euan Wright 1, Walker 2. P 4. —Joan Rolfe 1, Keith Turner 2. Moira Murphy (Writing), Ernest Ashworth (Handwork). P 2 —Norma Wright (Drawing). P I.—Queenie Rolfe, Grace Sampson. Special prizes were donated by the following: Mrs Cleland, Mrs Christie, Mrs Radcliff, Mrs Richards, Mrs Harkness, Miss C Hamilton, and Messrs Cleland and Harkness. The winners of the special prizes were as follows: Std. 6 — Marjorie Ashworth (Neddlework)- 1, Std. 4 —E'izabeth Allen 2, Std. 2— Gwendoline Rolfe 3. P 4. —Moira Murphy 4. Other sewing prizes were won by Dorothy Murphy (Std 4), Margaret .Goodwin (Std. 4), Joan Rolfe (P. 4), Norma Wright (P. 2). Marjorie Ashworth (Std. 6). Writing; Albert Turner (Std. 4), Diligence; Thomas Rolfe (Std. 4), Attendance; Thomas Rolfe (Std 2), Writing.

At the conclusion of the ceremony a heartv vote of thanks was, on the call of Mr Cleland, accorded those who had helped to make the picnic and function such a success, to the donors of prizes, and to Mr A. V. Richards for the use of the Park.
