RACING NOTES. (By Observer). The 1927-28 racing season is fast' drawing to a close, and not many meet- I ings under the lower class of weights ■ have yet to take place. Overhaul could not act in the heavy going at the Timaru 'meeting, but he was'not the only one that failed to find his feet on the greasy track.

When writing on Wednesday last my notcts for Saturday’s issue, I mentioned the last news 1 had received regarding th e condition of Mr J. B. Harcourt, (president of the Wellington Racing Club), who was then believed to be progressing favourably. Unfortunately by the time the notes appeared in print, Mr Harcourt had passed away. The demise of this veteran sportsman will be regretted by a large circle of friends throughout the Dominion. Black Duke scored the easiest win of the day at Timaru, when he won the Smithfield Handicap. Gold Brick hopped out smartly and carried on the running round to the turn for the straight. When the distance was reached Didham gave his mount his head, and he ran to the front with-

out any effort, and crossed the line with a two lengths lead from Money Mine, who was a similar distance ahead of Gold Brick. The winner’s time, considering the state of the going, was good, the watch showing 1.17 2-ssec. The price for one divvy, however, was a shade under evens. The Battle Colors and Black Duke combination was heavily supported by stay-at-home backers. Solgele was another that received support, and when it was found that the Solferino gelding had been allowed to go out at a false price, there was much joy by those who had supported the gelding trained by ' Bert Keeper.

The Autumnus gelding Vesperus still continues in the winning vein, as after his Waterlea Cup win at Trentham he journeyed on to the Hawke’s Bay fixture, where he won the Autumn Handicap of nine furlongs, beating quite a good lot, while on Saturday he captured the Burke Memorial, of a mile and a quarter, in which he defeated the Hawke’s Bay Cup winner Tresham, who had to be content with second berth. The trouble which occurred regarding the sale of Black Mint during the C. Easter meeting has been settled by the buyer (Mr O’Meara) deciding to have nothing more to do with the Catmint gelding, who still races in the colors ol Messrs Ballinger and Goodman. Mr YV. Doyle has Moratorium in the pink of condition at present, and this gelding should again salute the man in the box before the season closes, as he can carry weight and is quite at home when the sting is out of the going. Fresco, winner of the Irving Memorial Handicap at the recent Beefton meeting, appears to have taken a fresh lease of life for his plucky owner Mr D. H. Roberts, of Greymouth.
