John Henry Victor Mansill, solicitor; pleaded guilty at Auckland to the theft of £2041 belonging to clients. He was committed for sentence and bail was refused. The total defalcations were £7169.

In the Police Court at Dunedin, Dr. A. H. Crawshaw, District Health Officer, pleaded not guilty to being intoxicated while in charge of a car. The case is proceeding. Alterations of the Hunt Club’s meets for the remainder of the season are advertised. Frank Smeaton, for riding a motor cycle at Dunedin while intoxicated, was fined £5, had his license cancelled, and was prohibited from driving for 12 months. With his skull, nose and jaw fractured, Albert Francis Plumtree (25) was found dead on the Palmer Road near Kaponga on Saturday evening. His motor cycle was found in a dam aged condition about 13 yards from the body.

The body of Leonard William Frew (22), was found yesterday on Otahoua station (Wellington), in an advanced state of decomposition. Frew had been missing since March sth.

At the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting in March, Free Advice finished first and Baroh Bingen second in the Eclipse Handicap. An inquiry was held after the race into the complaint for interference, and the judge's placings were reversed, Baron Bingen being placed first and Free Advice second. McKendrick Bros., of Auckland, owners of Free Advice, appealed against the decision to the Trotting Association, which referred the case back to the Club. The Committee of .the New Brighton Trotting Club will hold an inquiry into the case on Thursday.

Timaru Police Station was the scene of a lively encounter on Friday night, when a little man, who called there, attacked Senior-Serge-ant Gibson, and also Constable Marsh. The assailant was Robert Barbour who it was stated in the Timaru Court on Saturday, was drunk at th e time. On Saturday morning he was qui,te a different man. The Magistrate ordered accused to come up for sentence when called upon within three mouths, on condition that during that time he refrained from taking liquor.

A motor accident occurred on Saturday evening at Turiroa, about five miles from Wairoa, when a taxi full of passengers, driven by Jim Aranui, crashed into the Hawke’s Bay Motor Company’s service car from Napier, driven by Z. Saba, containing five passengers. The cars were badly damaged and the occupants were cut and bruised, several requiring medical attention. A man named Fairweather was injured and sent to hospital, and one woman was cut through being thrown through the windscreen.

The pie cart proved a happy idea for raising money in connection with the Princess campaign, on Saturday night. The first ten dozen were gone at the picture interval, and before the audience came out all were sold that could be procured from the Waimate pie makers. The three chefs in their smart caps and aprons had the genuine French look but were weak on a’ccent. The coffee was acclaimed the real thing, and the pies disappeared rapidly into capacious local openings. An interested crowd watched proceedings and found much amusement in the novelty of Waimate’s first pie cart. Next Saturday something extra is promised.

A prominent Christdiureh footballer, Mr J. Blackaby, is coming to reside in Waimate, and his services have been secured by the Marist Football Club. He will play for the Marist senior, team on Thursday. Mr Blackaby who played for the Marist Club in Christchurch, has been in senior League for the last three seasons. He entered the League ranks by captaining the Marist third grade team, who won the competition with an unbeaten record. The following year he was promoted to the senior team, and lias the distinction of being on,, ol the few to attain representative honours in the first year. Last season he was again in the Canterbury team, and was chosen for the South Island as well. Had he remained it is thought that he would have been selected for the New Zealand team. Th e Waimate Marist senior team promises to be a very strong one, containing as it docs, besides Mr Blackpby, a number of the old players and many good young footballers who have graduated from the juniors. The Waimate carpenters are advised through the columns of this paper, of a meeting with the officers of the Timaru branch of the Amalgamated Society, to form a branch in Waimate, which, when all things are taken into account, is a step ■ in the right direction.
