No less than five Parties hic seeking the electors’ support, also a sprinkling ol independents. This resulted in many cut throat emitest*. and weakened the anti-Labourite chances. In several instances, the endorsed candidates of both wings of the Government Party, the Nat onalists and the main Country Party, eppoel each other. The Progressives are a split from the Country Partv. and the Liberals are New Party, wliom chief aim i> to briii^ - about Government by commission. When the counting closed la-: night, the returns were far from complete, and wide changes are jxissihle. but it was indicated that Labour had gained ground, with the chance ol il.-placmg (he Government. The Hon. Mr Egglestone Minister of Education) has apparently been defeated in St. Hilda by Mr Gray (Labour). The Government has apparently been defeated.
