TERRIBLY BURNED

WAIMATE WOMAN IN CRITICAL CONDITION. CLOTHES ALL ABLAZE. A serious accident befel Mrs Alex Coutts, of Edward Street, this morning, when her whole body from ears to knees was severely burned, as the result of her clothes catching fire. Practically every shred of her clothing, it is stated, was burned, and the woman’s body was raw. The victim is at present in hospital in a very critical condition.

Presumably, Mrs Coutts was working near the kitchen fireplace, when the flame blew out, igniting her dress, which blazed quickly. Her clothes, it is stated, were loosely worn, whieh would assist the spreading of the flames. Her efforts to quench the flames being unavailing. the terrified woman became ex cited, and rushed screaming out into the open. Attracted by the cries, a nextdoor neighbour, Mrs J. Herriott, came to the assistance of the unfortunate lady and rendered first aid. Dr. Wylie was promptly summoned, and found the woman in terrible, pain and after injecting morphia had the sufferer removed to the 1 < pital in the ambulance.
