RACING IN AUSTRALIA. (Per Press Association—Copyright.', MELBOURNE, Feb. 13. The V.A.T.C. autumn meeting opened to-day. The chief events resulted:— OAKLEIGH PLATE: 51 furlongs. —Baringhup 6.7, 1: Fujisan 10.4, 2; Whitta 6.7, 3. Nineteen started. Baringhup jumped to the front at the start and held that position all the way, stalling off a challenge by Fujisan in the straight and winning by a neck. Whitta was half a length away third. Time —Imin 6 Jsec. A protest by the trainer of Fujisan against Baringhup, on the ground of interference, was dismissed.

Heroic was first away, but was headed by Pantheon after a furlong. There was little between them on entering the straight, lint Heroic went to the front a short distance from the post and won by three-quarters of a length. Spearfelt was three lengths behind Pantheon. Time—lmin 5 5.1 sec. SYDNEY, February 13. At Rosehill, the Flying Welter resulted:—First Division: Fool’s Paradise 10.5, 1; Overyssel 8.12. 2; Ceo 9.5, 3. Thirteen started. Won comfortably by 21 lengths. Time — Imin 26.1 sec. Second Division: Bonne Chose 8.10, 1: Longfast 9.11, 2; Goldbeater 9.2, 3. Twelve started. Won by a head. Time —Imin 6?sec. ADELAIDE, February 13. At the Amateur Turf Club's meeting, the Kidman Stakes, 5 furlongs, resulted: —Jules Jordan 9.12, 1; Benjeroo 8.6, 2; All Quality 7.7, 3. Time —581 sec, an Australian record. MELBOURNE, February 13. During the second race at Caulfield yesterday, a fire broke out in the guinea stand. The occupants refused to leave the stand until the race was finished, then they came down with a rush and watched the structure burn to the ground. The damage is estimated at £50,000. The racing was not interfered with. There was no water available for fire-fighting, and the Brigade was unable to help.
