High up on the slopes of Mount Egmont a distressing accident occurred when Mrs Marks, of Hamilton, had both legs broken by a rock which rolled down and crashed into her legs. The woman was conveyed on a stretcher to the New Plymouth Hospital after a tortuous descent. A Glenavy storekeeper had an unusual experience at Christmastime. He was doing his rounds on the Ikawai Road, and eventually arrived at a spot where, on account of the heavy rains, he could proceed no further. He was unable to turn his car, owing to the water on the side of the road; and had to drive in reverse gear no less than two miles before he fould find loom to face about. Cerea l crops in parts of the Waimate district have suffered severely as a result of the recent heavy rains. The lack of dry warm weather has resulted in the straw being rank and soft, particularly on the heavier class of land; and the rain at Christmas was responsible for flattening some of the wheat and bar ley. At Willowbridge one observe’’ noted an area of several acres of barlev flattened to the ground, and a Redcliff farmer who had a paddock of wheat estimated to bo worth £BOO, reports that practically the whole crop is flat, while in parts streams of water were running over it. At Tawai and other dis tricts where the ground is lighter, and the straw consequently not so rank, comparatively little damage has been done.

The third drowning fatality in the Grey district within three days occurred yesterday at Rapahoe, when an Italian, Sante Tomnasi, aged 22, lost his life. Tomnasi, with a compatriot named Fulvio Dalle Nogar, was bathing in the surf near the mputh of the Seven Mile Creek, when both got into difficulties through inadvertently wading into a deep hole where there is a strong undertow. A party of surfbathers in the vicinity went to the assistance of the Italians, neither of whom could swim. Tomnasi disappeared, btft Nogar was saved through the plucky efforts of Miss Nellie Newton and a voung man named Kenneth Griffiths, who between them, managed to bring him ashore. At Hoki tika, a man named Hutchison was carried out of his depth and had a narrow escape, being brought ashore with the assistance of another bath<er.
