“It is not generally realised,’ states the Railway Board, apropos of railway crossings, “how large is the number of level crossings which have to be negotiated by the drivers on the trunk express trains in the course of their day’s rub.” The crossings which the express drivers on the North Island Alain Trunk have to pass over is as follows: — Wellington to Taihape 130, Taihape to Ohakune 31, Ohakune to Auckland 37 ; total 248 for three crews. The crossings in the South Island are: Christehiireh to Glenavy 119, Glenavv to Waihola 100, Waihola to Invereargill 97; total 316 for three crews.

Xmas Night Trains.—Price Bros.’ Cars will leave office to connect with all above trains. Book seats at office In the dusk of Sunday evening a motor-car containing four passengers came to a stop among the big boulders of Wain’s Crossing on the Waihao River. By the kind offices of Mr. Wain, who came to the rescue with his tractor, the ear was hauled out, and was able to resume its journey. It is stated that this is the third occasion recently that Mr. Wain has been called on for assistance by stranded motorists. Since the last flood, the ford is slightly higher up the river, and cars have to negotiate an awkward turn to

get out. The river bottom at the ford is mostly large boulders; and it was these that stopped the car on Sunday.

At the Arcadia pictures to-night, patrons will be entertained to one of Hoot Gibson's best pictures to date, “The Arizona Sweepstakes." It does not. follow the usual run of western pictures the first part dealing with the Chinatown of San Francisco, Hoot there getting mixed up in a shooting affray, thus bringing himself in enmity with the police. He manages to make a get-away from the city to ride in the Arizona sweepstakes: on which a lot depends, but not till after some narrow escapes. The race, being a cross-country run, is a very exciting one for the audience as well as for the riders. The picture is made more attractive by the. fair amount of comedy woven into it, and should suit all tastes.

For this week icnly: Special reductions in this season’s Millinery, “The Farmers,”

Oh, I love to milk the gentle cow, as she chews her cud with placid brow, and I love to rise at early morn, to barge through muck in the chilly dawn. Yes, I love the milking game all through, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, too. I love the flick of the untied tail and the restless hoof that kicks the pail, the splash of milk is as sweet to me as the song of birds in fuschia tree. When the sun sinks low in the western sky I stretch my limbs with a tired sigh, and say as I mop my sweating brow, Thank God for the good old milking cow. Do you l ask me why I love all this and why the milking to me is bliss? I love it I’d like to have you know, for the monthly cheque from THE TAIERI CO.
