FORESTRY LEAGUE.

FIRST ANNUAL MEETING. The first annual meeting of the Waimate branch of the above was held on Saturday last, Mr H. B. Johnstone presiding over a good attendance. The report stated that the league had had a very successful inauguration, a great many showing their interest in forestry. The chairman dealt with the matter of the Land Board selling the trees in Morven Park, he and othter members being under the opinion that it would be a mistake to cut out all the trees, several, more particularly the Larches, not yet having matured enough and if all the timber were placed on the market at once there might not be sufficient demand for it and thus much would be wasted which was not good for the conservation of the Dominion s forests—the object for which the league was formed was to help to conserve same. He (Mr Johnstone) thought they should do all in their power to help and , encourage local sawmillers and take up the dressing of local grown tim- ' ber and thus encourage people to ' plant trees The balance sheet showed receipts .£7 10s and expenditure £3 5s to head office; advertising £1 12s, expenses at Show £1 7s 6d, stamps, stationery, etc. 8/5; leaving credit balance 17/1. Mr Johnstone thanked members for their support, but declined reelection. He also thanked the secretary, Mr B. F. Whitney, for the great help he had given him. “A good organiser, and a host in him-. self,” said Mr Johnstone. Mr J. W. Hayes wa* elected t<> the position cf president and on, the' motion of Mr Whitney, who was unable to again take office, Mr W. J Paul was elected secretary. It was resolved to write to the Minister of Lands protesting against the whole of the Morven plantation being cut out. Mr Stokes stated that some of the trees required another ten years to come to maturity. Apologies for absence were received from Captain Rattray, Messrs Barnett, R. Sinclair, and Bailey. Mr S. J. Adams, who gave a donation of £l, was elected a member.
