At the smoke concert last night Mr George, the Secretary, proposed the toast of the judges, paying them a high tribute. He said judging was a very important task. The following were the judges at the show Poultry, Messrs Bradley Bros; fruit, flowers, farm and garden produce, Messrs G. Knowles and G. Sealey; cookery, preserves, etc., Mr A. Segar; fancy work, Mesdames G. Manchester, G. Shack leton, and J. Bitchener; grain, Mr R. Nicol; painting, Mr F. Nash.

Mr G. Lundon, of Lundon Bros., butchers, Waimate, had a miraculous escape from serious injury the other day. When passing the gas engine, which is of five horse power, his apron became entangled in the axle, and Mr Lundon was drawn in and carried round with the flywheel. Fortunately he had ghut off the gas shortly before, and the engine, after making one or two gyrations with Mr Lundon, came to a stop. He was extricated safely and was found to bo badly bruised, but his clothes were completely torn away from him.

While walking along the Petone Beach, last evening, states a Wellington P.A. message, a man named R. N. Laughton ran into the water o-l the Harbour and was drowned. A man walking a little way behind Laughton was so amazed at his strange action that some minutes elapsed before he realised the position and summoned help. The body was recovered a quarter of an hour later, when artificial respiration was applied fruitlessly. Nothing is known regarding the relatives of the deceased.

Speaking at the Winter Show Society’s smoke concert last night, one of the poultry judges. Mr G. H. Bradford, who speaks with authority, predicted a good season for the poultry industry this year, stating that it would probably be a better season than any experienced before. New Zealand would have to arrange to- export her eggs this year, and would probably have to export from 150,000 to 200,000 dozen to keep the surplus down.
