CITIZENS BALL

A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION The Waimate Library Committee are to be congratulated on the success which the Citizens’ Ball has once again brought to them. This year the Citizens’ Ball, which has come to be one of the foremost dances of the season, has been a greater success than it has been in previous yeajs. There was present a large crowd of about three hundred and fifty’of those who delight to indulge in the terpsichorean art. Many were present in fancy costumes which were of all imaginable types. These ranged from sybaritically dressed maidens to representatives of the unshaven, unbrushed man-of-the-roads, and of his Satanic Majesty. Some were gorgeous and luxurious, others were weird and fantastic. There were; in fact, many more people at the ball in fancy dresses than in any former year.

The judges, Dr. and Mrs Wylie, found great difficulty in picking out the choicest and best from such a great number of competitors There were present some who preferred to sit and watch the ball and examine the fancy costumes, rather than to “trip the light fantastic toe.”

For the onlookers there was erected at the end of the hall, a platform on which was seating accommodation.

Throughout the evening excellent music was supplied by Miss Morgan’s band, much to the appreciation of all present. The catering was well and satisfactorily carried out under the able hands of Mr Barford.

During the evening everybody thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and all seemed pleaded with the amusement provided.

The hall was beautifully decorated with electric lights of many colours, while the walls of the building were hung with flags. Cold as was the night air, everyone was kept warm by a splendid programme of dancing. The Grand March was led off by His Worship the Mayor and the Mayoress (Mr and Mrs Geo. Dash). Mr W. G. Paul acted as Master of Ceremonies.
