To the United States of America must be given the laurels for providing the world with the greatest number of sensations, both of a criminal nature and otherwise. Some time ago the cables told of a great scandal in American political, circles in regard to oil concessions, and more recently we were supplied with the news of the prosecution of a school teacher for the teaching of Darwin’s theory of the evolution of mankind. An even more ludicrous incident is recorded from the States, when only recently a noted criminal and bootlegger, on the occasion of his death, was paid homage by thousands of citizens of that country ,the like of which would only be paid to royalty and prominent statesmen in any other country in the world. The denizens of the underworld in the large American cities have been featured in many well-known -works of fiction and have also' been used as the characters and themes for various cinema pictures produced in the States. America has been looked upon as the founder of huge trusts and syndicates, of all kinds, but a cable message received from New York to-day, and which is published in another column, informs us of a rather startling and novel syndicate, whicli was formed for the ulterior motive of blowing up buildings and performing other bomb outrages at the request of any person or organisation, provided a certain sum of money was paid to the organisation for so doing. It would appear that there is far more opportunities for the criminal in 'America, and perhaps owing to the alleged graft and Tammany rules there is a much better chance of the wrongdoer escaping penalty of the law. In the ease under comment, however, tlfe leaders of the syndicate have been put under custody, and it will be interesting to wait and see w"hat penalties are imposed on them, or whether the organisation behind is powerful enough to undermine the law’s power and so effect the release of the criminals without their paying the pen-, alty of their misdeeds.
