PROHIBITION.

(Per Press Association—Copyright). WASHINGTON, Feb. 5. A further extension of prohibition sentiment in Latin America, is foreseen in the announcement on the agenda of the forthcoming fifth PanAmerican conference in March, which provides for the consideration of measures to secure progressive diminution of the consumption of alcoholic beverages. The United States is at present the only country to participate, having nation-wide prohibition, but various other central South American countries have partial prohibition. In Chile and Peru, there is an extremely active campaign in favour of prohibition being carried out. There is a law prohibiting the sale of liquors on Saturday and Sunday, and always in mining regions. Other Latin-American nations also have laws for the restriction of the sale of intoxicating beverages. It is expected that the conference will result in a programme of further restriction.—A. and N.Z. Cable.
