IMPERIALISM.
A FLICKERING FLAME. NEW ZEALAND SHIRKING. (Per Press Association—Copyright.) LONDON, May 24. The “Times” Empire supplement devotes generous space to Australasian affairs, wherein are several columns with a description of social, sporting, commercial and productive attractions of New Zealand, all of which are most cordially presented to readers. Special attention is paid by one article to the result of Washington Conference and to the Dominions’ Imperial relations. It is suggested that the Dominion Parliament does not realise the vitality of the problems with which the Imperial Conferences are faced. The “Times” says the Imperialism of the country is stirred to a bright flame every four years or so, but to a flame'which has more light than heat, and which shines more brightly in London than the Dominion, and languishes when a Conference is over. The article concludes that the desperate outlook which the naval problem of the Pacific presented a year ago has disappeared, yet even the total disappearance of capital ships from the Pacific and every other ocean would not alter the essential fact that New Zealand is absolutely dependent on the Empire’s sea power, yet not bearing her fair share of the cost.
