LONDON, May 22. Mr Chamberlain, replying to a question, referred to the statement reported to have been made by M. Tchitcherin at Genoa warning Japan that any attack by the latter on the Far Eastern Republic would automatically result in war with Russia.
The British Government would not make friendly representations to Japan to evacuate Russian territory without delay, as it relied on the fulfilment of the Japanese Government undertakings. The House of Commons read a third time the Empire Settlement Bill. Colonel Amery resisted Colonel Wedgewood’s amendment to restrict the scheme to the co-operation of the Dominion Governments so that private organisations would be excluded. The amendment was withdrawn.
