NOTES AND COMMENTS. Rational ran a good race on each day of the Egmont meeting. On the opening day he ran second with 9.9, and on" the concluding day won with 9.12—a good performance for a three-year-old. Our King (Multifid — Indian Queen) won the Great Northern Champagne Stakes as a two-year-old. He was a great sprinter, but unfortunately became affected in the wind. He has sired a most useful gelding in Irapuka, from Iranui, and the first of that -mare’s progeny to win. Irapuka was practically an unknown quantity when he won at Opunake, beating Income and strating the biggest outsider in a field of six. Since then he has won at Manawatua, beating Chimera, and also ran third to Grotesque and Birkie. He also won at Fielding, where he was unplaced with 9.3 behind Roman (6.13). Probably his best performances to date was at Egmont, where he defeated Rational on his own track at a difference of 111 b. There was 51b between the pair named on the concluding day, when the first day’s placings were reversed.

The place-getters in the Egmont Steeplechase are all engaged in the principal cross-country events at Wanganui and Ellerslie. The connections of the Auckland-owned Oakleigh (St Amans —Jean) were unlucky enough not to get the stake after passing the post first. Oakleigh carried top weight at Egmont, whereas at Wanganui and Ellerslie he is in receipt of 321 b from Coalition. Oakleigh has been a useful cross-country performer for two seasons past. The season before last he won twice atEllerslie, and also scored at Napier Park and Hastings Last season, at Riccarton, he ran third in the Grand National, and won the Beaufort Steplechase. Khartoum who was placed first in the Egmont Steeplechase, failed in the same event a year ago, but won on the second day, when he was sent out favourite. Judging by Sir Solo’s display, there is a race in him yet. He is in the Wanganui Steeplechase with 9.5 and the Gre.pt Northern with 9.0,
